What does Excellence with Humanity look like in your work with students?

Excellence with Humanity, in my eyes, is the commitment to truly knowing your students—not just as learners, but as whole people. It means meeting them where they are, honoring their stories, strengths, and struggles, and seeing their potential even when they cannot yet see it themselves. It is holding them to high standards while simultaneously giving them the tools and support to meet those expectations. It is the balance of challenge and compassion. Pushing them to grow while ensuring they feel safe, valued, and understood.

What’s your favorite project to teach?

This is a tough one for me! I truly value the sustainability project in Grade 7. It offers students the opportunity to take meaningful ownership of a long-term investigation centered on one of the most urgent challenges of our time: climate change. Throughout the project, students examine its causes, analyze its impacts, and design thoughtful, actionable solutions. What stands out most to me each year is students’ creativity, optimism, and fierce sense of responsibility. They approach the climate crisis not with apathy, but with imagination and resolve. I am continually inspired by the boldness of their ideas. I often find myself thinking that if they were in charge, we would be in very capable hands.

In three words, what makes Rivers special?
