Performing Arts

The Performing Arts Department, recognizing that the performing arts are at the core of human existence, offers ensembles and classes in a supportive environment that provides for performance-based assessment and process-oriented learning. Students are encouraged to exceed previous levels of achievement, discover self-confidence, develop self-esteem, build self-discipline, and achieve self-awareness. Teachers are models for active learning, risk-taking, and self-expression. Students are taught the arts for the sake of the arts and as a model for all learning. Motivated students are prepared for advanced study.

The study of the performing arts is a major component of a well-rounded education. As such, the performing arts at Rivers aim to help students understand how to listen to and interact with other performing artists as well as to express themselves confidently, articulately, and artistically.

For some, that means learning contemporary music written within the last 25 years for the very first time. For others, it means stepping forward as composers, hearing their own work come to life in performance. This year’s Seminar, the 47th in RSC’s history, was defined by both experiences, embodied in the journeys of two RSC students: Eduardo (Eddie) De Souza ’26 and Gavin Armstrong.

  • “Nothing’s Gonna Change If You Don’t Change It”: Nonesuch Players Present 9 to 5: The Musical

For two nights this February, the Nonesuch Players’ production of 9 to 5: The Musical whisks audiences back in time to the 1970s, when the grind of office life meant typewriters, landlines, lots of paper—and keeping to the status quo in which women were treated as less than their male counterparts. With a tagline of “Nothing’s gonna change if you don’t change it,” the show tells the story of three women taking charge of their own lives to make a difference—with plenty of humor, heartfelt songs, and flashy dance numbers along the way.
