Welcome to Rivers Upper School

Welcome to Rivers! September will be here before you know it, and we can’t wait to welcome you to the Upper School community. Rivers is full of dynamic opportunities—both academic and personal—and soon enough you’ll see that there are so many ways to chart your course. Just as each of you is different, so will be your paths—and that’s just as it should be.

In the meantime, you may have some questions about what comes next! This page is the information ‘hub’ for new students and their families. You’ll see it has four sections: (1) Next Steps for Families from our Academic & Co-curricular Programs and (2) Next Steps for Families from our Business Office in preparing for next year - including some time sensitive actions we need from you; (3) Key Dates for the Start of School, so you can mark your calendars; (4) Helpful Documents that we know families need, like our calendar for the year and the course catalog. As September approaches we’ll continue to add resources here as they become available.

If, along the way, you have questions about anything whatsoever, we are here to help! We’ll work together to make sure you have all the answers you need to be ready for next year.

Take Action - Next Steps from our Academic Program

Our academic focus for this spring is finding right courses for your child’s academic interests and needs. While we rely as much as possible on materials that have already been submitted through admissions, we also use placement tests and current teacher questionnaires to ensure the best match of each student with our curriculum.

Click on the headers below for some specific next steps.

  • Sign up for Placement Testing and Ensemble Auditions - By April 15

Placement tests in history, language, and math help our academic team place each student in the right course. Placement testing is required for every incoming student, and is offered from 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. on April 18 and April 25 at Rivers.

All incoming students will sign up for a placement test date through RiversNet by 9:00 a.m. on April 15. Please sign into RiversNet and navigate to the “Resources” tab. Then, please click on the tile labeled “Helpful Documents and Information.” On that page, click “Instructions for Accessing pickAtime” and view the video demonstrations for how to schedule placement tests. Please email Liz Creamer (e.creamer@rivers.org) with any questions about placement testing.

Students who are interested in auditioning for an ensemble (jazz, chorus, classical, and musical theater) will have the opportunity to do so when on campus for placement tests. Auditions will occur between 12:00 p.m. - 1:30 p.m. for incoming Upper School students on 4/18 or 4/25. Note students already accepted into the Conservatory Program do not need to re-audition. Please email Dan Shaud (d.shaud@rivers.org) with questions about auditions.

To sign up for audition slots, sign into RiversNet and navigate to the “Resources” tab. Then, please click on the tile labeled “Helpful Documents and Information.” On that page, click “Instructions for pickAtime” and access the video demonstrations for how to schedule auditions.

If you are encountering issues signing into RiversNet, please email Ash McGlone at a.mcglone@rivers.org
  • Send Current Teacher Questionnaires - By April 15

Below, you will find links to current teacher questionnaires for your child’s current math and foreign language teachers. These questionnaires provide both background on what specific topics your child’s course has covered this year and your child’s strengths in the discipline.

To do: Once you click on the link for the appropriate questionnaire below you will see the URL in your browser. Please email that URL to your current teachers by April 15 and ask for them to complete it by April 29.

  • Learn About Our Curriculum

We encourage families to learn more about our curriculum prior to their course counseling meetings. Prior to your course counseling meeting, review our course catalog to see an overview of our curriculum and details about the course offerings available. If you have general questions about our curriculum, connect with Chris Dalton, dean of academics and institutional research (c.dalton@rivers.org). If you have a question specific to your child’s courses for next year, you may contact Kristin Harder, course counselor for all incoming students (k.harder@rivers.org).
  • Complete Your Student's Transition to Rivers: Parent/Caregiver Questionnaire

As you think about the transition to the year ahead, please take a moment to tell us more about your student. These questions are intentionally open-ended so you can share whatever information feels most relevant and important to you. This information will be shared with the relevant grade dean, course counselor, and your student's advisor in an effort to make your student's transition to Rivers as welcoming as possible. Please complete this form by April 29.
  • Meet with your Course Counselor - During May and Early June

Kristin Harder, our course counselor for new, incoming students, will be in touch to set up a meeting with incoming Upper School students and their families to discuss their plan for courses and co-curricular activities at Rivers next year. These meetings, which begin in May, are holistic in nature and focus on each student’s curricular and co-curricular interests. In the meantime, please feel free to reach out to Mrs. Harder with questions that you have at k.harder@rivers.org.
