Quincy Treisman ’27: Boston Children's Hospital Neuropathology Lab

Quincy Treisman ’27
I have a strong passion for cancer research and care, and this summer I had the opportunity to broaden my knowledge with an internship at Boston Children’s Hospital. I worked closely with Dr. Sanda Alexandrescu, the director of neuropathology and autopsy, to learn more about neuroanatomy, pathological diagnoses, and recent developments in the pathological and oncological fields.

I spent each day shadowing her in tumor board meetings, case reviews at the microscope, and brain cuttings, as well as conducting research in preparation for the Society for Pediatric Pathology Conference. Specifically, I researched the process of allocating tissue from small biopsies in pediatric neuropathology. As I conducted this research, I learned the entire process of creating slides for the microscope, as well as the ethical and technical challenges when pathologists are faced with small amounts of tissue.

My biggest takeaway from this internship was how much you can learn when you are being immersed in the material. For example, after observing my first brain cutting in the autopsy suite, I was allowed to take part in the second one, having the opportunity to cut small sections of the brain tissue to be made into slides in the histology lab.
