What does Excellence with Humanity look like in your work with students?

To me, Excellence with Humanity means showing up as our best selves. Whether in academic, athletic, or artistic pursuits, we strive to do our very best and to always treat others with respect. Middle school is a time and space where students face challenges and make mistakes, but if we can instill a focus on working hard and being kind, students will realize positive outcomes.

What’s your favorite unit to teach?

My favorite unit to teach is similarity, which culminates with the Grade 7 scaling project. Students choose an object which they then size up or down to create a scaled replica. It is a fun interdisciplinary activity that reinforces the use of scale factors and also produces some really cool models. This year, some highlights included Fenway Park, a Lego man, a 737 airplane, and many others!

In three words, what makes Rivers special?

Enthusiastic. Inclusive. Community.
