This week, 22 students from Rivers were honored with Boston Globe Scholastic Art Awards. Selected from a competitive pool of thousands of applicants across Massachusetts, Rivers students won a total of 13 Honorable Mentions, four Silver Key awards, and five of the prestigious Gold Keys awards.

Seniors Adrienne Anderson, Shylana Roman, and Charlie Rugg, freshman Page Cochran, and eighth-grader Katherine Mecke, were among the select few students who won Gold Key Awards. Their art will be on display at the Mass State Transportation Building in Boston (along with the Silver Key-winning work) until February 27, when the pieces will be moved to New York City to be juried on the national level.

The 22 students honored represent more than half of the school’s entries in the competition.

“These awards are a testament to the depth of the arts program at Rivers, with students earning awards in all of the different disciplines we teach,” says art chair David Saul. “Clearly, the quality of art emerging from our studios is excellent and demonstrates the passion and energy of the Rivers arts faculty working with our student artists.”

The students vied for top honors in 12 different categories: animation, ceramics and glass, computer art, design, digital imagery, drawing, mixed media, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, and video and film. The award ceremonies will be held on February 8, 2009 at John Hancock Hall at 180 Berkeley Street at noon (Silver Key) and 2:00 p.m. (Gold Key).
