Maddie Bauer '13 Named 2018 Schwarzman Scholar

 

Established in 2015, the Schwarzman Scholar program selects students who exhibit leadership potential, academic ability, and inspire others to follow in their footsteps. The 2018 class of Schwarzman Scholars is comprised of 129 students from 30 countries and 75 universities and each will be trained to confront the most difficult challenges the world will face in the coming years while also developing an understanding of China.

 

Maddie studies history and East Asian studies, plays violin in the Yale Symphony Orchestra, and is an editor at the student publication “China Hands”, which tells stories and provides analysis of contemporary China.

 

“When I began to consider post-graduate opportunities, Schwarzman was at the top of my list due to the fact that it integrates my interests in China, foreign policy, and leadership,” Maddie said. “Particularly, I am most excited and passionate about the Schwarzman mission of promoting leadership. I am an advocate for female leadership, serving as vice president of Yale’s student government last year. Rivers helped me cultivate this interest in leadership.”

 

Maddie had spent time in China earlier in her college career and spent last summer working at the State Department in the East Asia Pacific Bureau's Office of Economic Policy.

 

“It was through working in this office that I knew I wanted to pursue higher education in international affairs and a career in foreign policy with a focus on China. This fellowship will enable me to realize my goals for the future.”

 

Before Yale, however, Maddie’s interest in language and culture began at Rivers where she took Spanish throughout her career and took advantage of the History elective program to dive deeper into other cultures. She was also  president of Rivers’ Debate Team and served as National Director of Debate for the Junior State of America.

 

“It was the incredible teachers at Rivers who inspired me to pursue foreign languages and instilled in me a curiosity for learning about the world,” Maddie said.
