Summer Internship Journals: Michelle Ryder '17 at Boston Children's Hospital

Michelle Ryder ’17 is Rivers’ most recent summer intern in the Simulation Lab at Boston’s Children’s Hospital. In this unique, fast-paced setting, Michelle is able to experience training sessions that simulate medical crises that might affect any one of Children’s many departments.

These are Michelle's impressions during her first week:

It's only my fourth day at the Boston Children's Hospital Sim Lab and I've already been bombarded with new information and new ways of thinking. The mantra here is “practice and collaboration make perfect.”

As the name implies, the Sim Lab simulates events. Everyone from residents to attendings practice on realistic mannequins that “breathe”, “talk”, “bleed”, have beating hearts and moving lungs. All of this technology is managed by Sim technicians. This allows newcomers, newly formed teams, and collaboration skills to flourish. Every department at Children’s hospitals associated with Children’s take part in some sort of Sim training.
