Welcome Back Barbecue Draws Hundreds to Celebrate the Start of School
On the first Friday of the academic year, parents and caregivers, students, and members of the professional community gathered on campus in the evening to reconnect and celebrate the start of school at the Rivers Welcome Back Barbecue. With more than 540 community members registered for the event, “the energy and excitement for the start of a new school year were palpable,” said Director of Family and Alumni Engagement Janet McKeeney.
Head of School Ryan S. Dahlem gave a brief welcome on Hutton Terrace, where delicious barbecue fare was served. He commented that the start of a new academic year means many wonderful things on the horizon, including the launch of Rivers’ new strategic plan.
Dahlem noted that the year was already off to a great start, saying he’d heard positive affirmations as he checked in with students throughout the week. Responses ranged from, “I love my teachers!” to “The food is so good!”—and then, by Friday, “I’m tired!” It was a sentiment many could relate to after a lively first week.
“The purpose of tonight is to be together and connect,” Dahlem said. Enjoying the warm fall weather and sense of community, attendees spread out over Lank Quadrangle and wandered down to support the boys’ soccer team at their scrimmage on Baker Field.
“Launching a school year takes an enormous amount of energy, and I appreciate all your efforts in ensuring such a strong start,” Dahlem said.
