Tossing It Up for Rivers: Cornhole Tournament

More than 200 parents/caregivers and members of The Rivers School professional community gathered in the MacDowell Athletic Center for the school’s first-ever “Toss It Up for Rivers” cornhole tournament on Friday. From 7:00 to 10:00 p.m., the indoor turf transformed into a festive, high-energy social space, complete with lively competition, laughter, and community spirit.

The spring social event was anchored by about 50 teams, all enthusiastic and ready to toss their way to victory, with tournament logistics handled by Boston Cornhole and the Scoreholio app. Participants were encouraged to download the app in advance to keep the evening’s matches running smoothly.

As guests arrived, they were treated to a delicious spread including sliders, fresh salads, and elegant charcuterie boards from Executive Chef Cory Campbell and his culinary team. To bring the cornhole experience to life, walls were adorned with signage and catchy slogans to educate and entertain beginners and experienced players alike: “Oh Shucker!” introduced players to a word for when a bag is tossed and hits another player’s bag, knocking it off the board. “Air Mail It!” referred to a player tossing a bag and landing it in the hole without touching the cornhole board.

Head of School Ryan S. Dahlem welcomed attendees with an enthusiastic rallying cry: “Tonight, let’s toss it up for Rivers!” His remarks celebrated the strength of the Rivers community and the commitment of its families and faculty. Dahlem also took a moment to recognize the dedicated parent volunteers who made the event possible, including Amy Dunne P’06, ’08, director of parent programs and special events, along with Lauren and Dates Fryberger P’26, Elizabeth Soares P’27, and Ana Vukovic P’30, who helped transform the athletic center into a lively social venue.

In the spirit of gratitude, Dahlem also acknowledged the many parent volunteers who contributed to appreciation efforts during the week, bringing joy to the school’s professional community with a special breakfast and beach-themed gift bags.

Looking ahead, he noted the tent rising on campus as a sign that graduation is near—just two weeks away. He extended a warm welcome to the families of the Class of 2025 and offered a poignant reminder: “The days are long but the years are short. Thank you for sharing your children with us.”

To the delight of the crowd, the tournament concluded with cheers and high-fives as winners were crowned. Congratulations to our first-place winners: Michael Rand P’26, ’28 and Matthew Daly P’26. Kirsten and Jedd Morin P’25, ’26, ’31 took second place honors.

Dahlem closed his remarks with heartfelt appreciation: “Tonight is a celebration of you—our parents, caregivers of our students—who make Rivers the extraordinary place that it is. You are the reason we are here.”

As the evening wound down, one message rang clear: The Rivers community knows how to come together, have fun, and celebrate all that makes the school so special. Paul Kravitz P’28, whose impeccable skills were on full display all evening, expressed a sentiment shared by many: “Training for next year starts tomorrow!”
