Boys' Cross Country Championship Punctuates Fall Athletic Season

The fall of 2017 will be remembered as a season of firsts and a season of lasts. The boys’ varsity cross country team closed out Rivers’ fall athletic season is style by claiming the program’s first-ever New England Preparatory School Track Association Division III Championship on November 11 and boys’ soccer coach Bob Pipe coached his final game after 20 years on the sideline.

The girls’ varsity cross country team’s third place finish at the ISL Championships was the program’s highest-ever finish. The Red Wings also finished third at the NEPSTA Division III meet, making 2017 the first year that both the boys’ and girls’ teams earned team awards in the same season.

The varsity field hockey team saw its season come to a close in the NEPSAC Class B Tournament semifinals when they lost, 3-2, in overtime to the No. 1 seed and eventual champion Governor’s Academy.

The varsity boys’ soccer team lost its final game, 3-0, to a talented Middlesex team in the NEPSAC Class B quarterfinals. It was the final game for Coach Pipe, who finishes his soccer-coaching career with a 201-112-42 record with two ISL Championships and four NEPSAC Championships.

The girls’ varsity volleyball program continued to grow in its second season, posting a 9-10 record that included a number of close games against some of the best squads in New England.

The girls’ varsity soccer team posted its 16th consecutive winning season under head coach Susanna Donahue and once again had one of the best defensive records in the ISL. The Red Wing defense held its opponents to just 12 goals in 12 games.
