Fall Teams Compete in Post-Season; Coach Donahue Notches 200+ Wins
With several varsity teams prepping for the NEPSAC quarterfinals on Wednesday, November 14, the cross country teams got a jump on the post season at the New England Championships at Canterbury School on Saturday. Mark Ryan ’20, Cam Stathos ’21, and Stephanie Dailey ’19 earned All-New England honors and the boys’ team finished 4th overall.
Mark earned 4th place and Cam came in 5th in the boys’ race, while Stephanie finished 9th, and the girls’ team came in 12 overall, strong showings for both teams considering there were a number of runners out with illness and injuries. The previous Saturday, Mark was 8th at the ISL Championships and Stephanie was 15th, both earning All-ISL medals. Both teams finished in 8th place at the event.
The girls’ varsity soccer team finished the regular season with a 13-3-1 record and will continue their season on Wednesday as the No. 3 seed in the NEPSAC Class B quarterfinals against No. 6 seed St. Mark’s at home at 2:00 p.m. Earlier this month, the girls celebrated a major program milestone as head coach Susanna Donahue earned her 200th career win with a 5-0 victory against St. Mark’s on October 26.
Since arriving at Rivers in 2002, Coach Donahue’s team has qualified for the New England tournament 16 times. In addition, the team captured ISL championships in 2006, 2007, 2014 and 2015, and has also won four NEPSAC championships. Donahue was named the National Soccer Coaches Association New England Coach of the Year in 2016.
The boys’ varsity soccer team finished the regular season with a 8-5-2 record and will continue their season on Wednesday as the No. 6 seed in the NEPSAC Class B Tournament. The Red Wings will travel to No. 3 Brooks School for a 2:00 p.m. rematch. They hope to reverse Brooks’ 2-0 win on October 13.
The varsity field hockey team earned its way into the NEPSAC Class B Tournament by posting a 13-4-0 record. The No. 2 seed Red Wings will take on No. 7 seed Cushing Academy at home on Wednesday at 2:15 p.m.
