Homecoming 2018 was one of Rivers’ most exciting, from the debut of the new Red Wing mascot on Friday morning right on through Saturday night’s 37-13 football victory over St. George’s on the newly dedicated Waterman Field. Friday evening, girls’ varsity soccer took on Brooks for an exciting 5-0 win under the lights, following the cross-country meet with Nobles, Dexter/Southfield, and Montrose and volleyball against BB&N in the late afternoon.
Shortly before the football team kicked off, Head of School Ned Parsons formally dedicated East Field as the new Waterman Field. In his remarks, he gave a brief history of the original Waterman Field, which was funded through the generosity of Frank S.Waterman III, Rivers class of 1941 and former trustee. In 1978, Mr. Waterman offered to fund a proper football field for Rivers, rather than the rock-strewn field the team was accustomed to. After tearing up the old field, leveling it, and introducing proper drainage, new sod was installed, and Waterman Field was born. The grass was replaced with a turf field in 2006, greatly extending the availability of the field for games, practices, and “recess.”
Mr. Parsons thanked Mr. Waterman’s sons, John Waterman ’69 and Sturdy Waterman ’74, and acknowledged their own support of the school’s initiatives and service on Rivers’ Alumni Council. By moving Waterman Field, space was created in the center of campus to construct the new Center for Science and Visual Arts, scheduled to open in December 2019.
Fans enjoyed the tasty fare at the hot dog stand on Nonesuch Field during the varsity field hockey and boys’ soccer games, as well as the Roxy’s grilled cheese truck at Waterman Field. Rivers sweatshirts and hats were hot-selling items at the Parents’ League pop-up store, and hot cider was on tap to warm the fans as the temperatures fell.
