Rivers officially opened for the 2018-2019 school year on September 4 with a day jammed packed with classes, meetings, workshops, and practices, ending with a raucous construction-themed Red & White competition, a nod to the future Center for Science and Visual Arts that is soon to be under construction. Leading up to Tuesday’s opening were orientation trips and events for each grade level; a leadership retreat for team, club and organization leaders; college workshop sessions for seniors; and preseason practices for varsity athletes.
The ninth grade made its annual trip to Windsor Mountain for three days and two nights of activities ranging from kayaking to problem solving—a chance to bring former Middle Schoolers and new ninth graders together under the watchful eyes of their senior advisors. The juniors volunteered at a variety of non-profits, including New Life Furnishings, Greater Boston Food Bank, and Cradles to Crayons, before joining the sophomores in Boston for an afternoon of bowling at Jillian’s. Finally, the senior class went white-water rafting and enjoyed a night away together before embarking on their final year at Rivers.
Students in Grades 6 and 7 met their fellow classmates in the week leading up to the opening of school, while the eighth graders spent a day at Camp Nonesuch preparing for their roles in the opening week’s Leadership Lab. This three-day program is structured around activities that introduce the Middle Schoolers to Rivers’ definition of leadership: “Be your best self and positively influence others.” Click here to read the blog by Dr. Mike Kris on the opening of school.
