On Monday, May 7, more than 120 Rivers alumni, parents, and friends enjoyed some of the best spring weather yet at the 18th Annual Rivers School Golf Tournament to Benefit Financial Aid. The event raised more than $75,000 to help deserving and qualified students attend Rivers, and provided a welcome opportunity for members of the community to reconnect on the Robert Trent Jones-designed course at Charter Oak Country Club.
The success of the tournament was due in large part to the efforts of the Golf Committee, led by Jeff Berman ’99, and the generosity of the Daley Family – Pat ’84 P’13,’15,’18 and Fred P’12,’14,’16 – who donated Charter Oak for the day.
The honorees of the day were the Carlin brothers, long-time supporters of both Rivers and the Golf Tournament. Jamie Carlin ’81, P’15,’16 accepted the honor on behalf of his brothers, John ’83, P’18 and Matt ’84 just before the late morning start.
“The Carlin family has been a big part of this event since its early days,” said Gary Todd ’84 in presenting the award. “Over the years they have been a mainstay as our lunch sponsor, and they have given us all a chance to play the Newport Country Club through the tournament auction. Not only have they been instrumental in this event, they have been a huge part of Rivers for over 30 years now. Jamie, we appreciate the time and effort you all have given to help make the tournament so successful. Please accept our deepest appreciation for your commitment to Rivers."
The foursome of Scott Barchard ‘06, John Corridan ‘06, Athletic Director Bob Pipe, and math teacher and head basketball coach Keith Zalaski took first place, carrying on their legacy despite the absence of B. J. Dunne ’06 who just took over as head basketball coach at Gettysburg College. Coming in second were teachers Dan McCartney and Jeff Meropol with Dan Snyder P’21 and Tony Massarotti P’23. In third place were Dan Lane ’04, Tim Bigelow ’06, Pat Gallagher ’04, and Steve Valair ’02.
This year’s Super Raffle—a trip for two to either Miami or Nashville to watch a New England Patriots Game—was won by Dave Pearson ’84. Coincidentally, the raffle, entitled The Kenny Coles ’84 Super Raffle, was put together in Kenny’s memory by his childhood friend and current parent Andrew Miller ’20, and was sponsored by fellow classmate Gary Todd and his law firm, Todd & Weld, LLP.
Over the past 18 years, the tournament has raised more than $1 million and has played a significant role in supporting dozens of Rivers students who have gone on to attend top colleges and universities around the world.
