David Tierney to Conduct Final RSO Concert

David Tierney will conduct his final concert as Director of The Rivers Symphony Orchestra on Sunday evening, May 13, at 7:00 p.m. at NEC’s Jordan Hall. The concert will feature four student soloists— two graduating seniors in The Rivers School’s Conservatory Program and the two concerto competition winners from The Rivers School Conservatory. Ashley Burgarella ’18 will play the first movement of Max Bruch’s Violin Concerto while Alex Clay ’18 will play Carl Maria von Weber’s Clarinet Concertino. One of the concerto competition winners, Rivers eighth grader Theo Teng, will play the first movement of Robert Schumann’s Piano Concerto.

Rounding out the solo performances is concerto competition winner Sarah Royka from Lunenberg who will play the first movement of Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 1. The Rivers Symphony Orchestra, which Mr. Tierney founded 21 years ago, will conclude the program with a performance of Beethoven’s iconic Fifth Symphony—possibly the best-loved and most recognized piece of classical music.

Mr. Tierney, who is chair of the Performing Arts Department at Rivers and Director of The Rivers School Conservatory will be leaving after 26 years to become Head of School at the Cambridge Friends School. This final concert for the RSO in the 2017-2018 season is free and open to the public.
