Ease into Summer with Rivers’ Mini-Term

With spring break just around the corner, it’s time to think about how to spend the much longer summer break. New this summer is an exciting way to bridge the divide between classes and vacation—a two-week Mini-Term from June 18 - 29. Taught by some of Rivers’ most dynamic teachers, these half-day courses allow students to spend the mornings and afternoons in two very different activities—they might start the day Creating Video Games with Code and then Explore Alternative Surface/Firing Techniques in the ceramics studio after lunch. Other mini-courses include Art Through Technology; Data Analytics; Field Methods in Environmental Science; Mindfulness, Literature, and Yoga; and Woodworking. Students may also enroll in just a morning or afternoon class.

Returning for the second year is the popular Business Planning: Entrepreneurship in Action course, taught by Rivers alumnus Greg Stoller ’87, a senior lecturer at Boston University’s Questrom School of Business. This on-campus course, which meets on Thursday mornings from June 28 - August 2, is designed to provide an authentic experience as part of an internal entrepreneurship project team. Students will be placed in small teams to focus on one of many different start-up concepts presented by real-world entrepreneurs in the first week. Each team will work with the entrepreneur on planning a business from product development, manufacturing and distribution, through finance, marketing, and sales. At the end of the course, groups will present a 5-minute “elevator pitch” to a panel of business professionals as well as develop a strategic plan.

Other options for the summer include on-site courses like Algebra Boot Camp, Computer Programming, Physics Boot Camp, and Writing Workshop. Online courses, for those who prefer to study from home or while away, include Experiential Writing, New Media & Digital Identity, and Topics in Economics; all except New Media are taught by Rivers faculty.

While Rivers Day Camp has suspended operation this summer while the main campus undergoes some infrastructure upgrades, Camp Nonesuch, an elective-based summer camp experience for children who have completed grades 1 through 8, is accepting registrations. Campers can choose from a wide variety of activities for each two-week session, including arts and crafts, sports, waterfront activities, group games, and performing arts.

The Rivers School Conservatory also offers three summer programs in addition to private music lessons. Summer Music at Rivers is a two-week summer program for students entering grades 3-12. Students participate in chamber music, large ensembles, music theory, performance class, lunch, recreation, and four private lessons per session. Summer Jazz is a two-week immersion into jazz studies for students entering grades 3-12. Students participate in daily combo rehearsals, improv class, masterclasses, electives, lunch, and recreation. Summer Orchestra is a week-long morning program for talented young string players. There are multiple orchestra levels to accommodate beginner through advanced students.

Registration is now open for Rivers’ 2018 Academic Programs, Music at Rivers, and Camp Nonesuch, on the program website at www.summeratrivers.org. Questions? Contact Director of Summer Programs David Tierney at d.tierney@rivers.org.
