Red Wings 5 for 5 in Holiday Tournaments

Rivers’ student athletes may have been on an academic hiatus over the holidays, but they put in hours on the ice and on the floor, winning five titles in five tournaments. Boys’ hockey won their first-ever championship in the St. Sebastian’s Tournament, and both the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams won the Rivers Holiday Tournament. Then the Red Wings finished off the break with two more titles: boys’ hockey won this weekend’s Belmont Hill/Nichols Tournament and girls’ basketball won the Shooting Touch Classic.

In additional, the girls' hockey team won their three matches at the Southfield showcase at the start of break, and the boys’ basketball team had a solid win over Hamden Hall in the Belmont Hill/Roxbury Latin Invitational Tournament this weekend.

Boys’ hockey began a grueling schedule in the Belmont Hill/Nichols Tournament last Thursday, with their first match-up against New Hampton ending in a 3-3 tie. They went on to beat Brunswick, 2-1, and Nichols, 3-1, on Friday, before the semi-finals against Kimball Union on Saturday. They beat KUA 2-0, placing the Red Wings in the finals against Brunswick. In a nail-biter, Rivers won the title thanks to an overtime goal by Billy Shea '18, clinching the championship with a final score of 2-1.

Meanwhile, the girls’ basketball team defeated Nobles 70-61 on Saturday in the first round of the Shooting Touch Classic, sponsored by Belmont Hill at Tufts University. The Red Wings went on to beat Marianapolis 59-54 in the finals, earning them the tournament title. Now in its second year, the tournament raises money for Shooting Touch, an organization that “uses the power of basketball to deliver global health education, intervention and empowerment to at-risk youth, women and their families.”
