Rivers’ Athletics Department is pleased to welcome Darren Flutie as the offensive coach for the Red Wings football team, beginning in the fall of 2018. Flutie was a Canadian Football League wide receiver, playing for the BC Lions, Edmonton Eskimos, and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. He is fourth all-time leader in the CFL in catches, fourth in career receiving yardage, and held the BC Lions' record for receiving yardage in a season from 1994 to 2004 with 1731 yards.
Flutie, who attended Boston College, played in the NFL for the San Diego Chargers in 1988, before moving to the CFL. His CFL career extended from 1991 until 2002, when he became an analyst on the CFL on CBC from 2002-2006. In 2007, he was inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame, and is listed as one of the CFL's Top 50 players of the league's modern era by Canadian sports network TSN.
After his retirement Flutie, a Natick, MA native, served as a volunteer coach with the Natick High School football team and was their boys’ basketball head coach during the 2008-09 season. He then coached football for Newton South High School. He looks forward to working with Coach Tom Bourdeau and the Red Wings.
