Girls' Varsity Basketball Claim 2015 Holiday Tournament Title
The 46th Annual Rivers Holiday Tournament once again brought some of the best basketball teams from New England to Winter Street last weekend. The girls’ varsity basketball team came away champions while the boys’ team lost a hard-fought championship game to Beaver Country Day School.
Play opened with a Thursday double-header featuring both the girls’ and boys’ varsity basketball teams. The girls’ kicked the action off with a well-earned 53-50 win over Marianapolis Prep to advance to the Tournament Championship game against Northfield Mt. Hermon. The boys’ followed suit by knocking off Millbrook School, 61-60.
Tess Sussman ’18 led the way for Rivers in the championship game as the Red Wings claimed their eighth straight Rivers Holiday Tournament championship with a 54-43 win over NMH. Tess was named the girls’ tournament MVP and was joined by teammate Julia Thissell ’16, NMH’s Vanessa Udoji and Sam Dallier, and Marianapolis’ Caroline Soucy on the All-Tournament team.
The boys continued their run through the tournament on Friday with a 60-40 win over BB&N in the semifinals, earning themselves a spot in the Tournament Championship against Beaver. Despite a 31-point performance by Azar Swain ’17, Beaver emerged victorious, 77-74.
Beaver’s Shandon Brown was named the boys’ tournament MVP and was joined by teammate Kevin Scarlett, Rivers’ Azar Swain and Jermaine Samuels ’17, and Millbrook’s Brendan Hoban on the All-Tournament team.
