As owner of Boston Souvenir Distributors, Matt Tobin ’90 finds many benefits to his profession. Through his work at the company, which was awarded The National Postcard and Souvenir Distributor of the Year Award for three consecutive years, Tobin meets new and interesting people each day. He also enjoys working for himself and the challenges he faces as he runs one of the largest souvenir distributors in New England.
The aspect that Tobin appreciates most about his job, however, is the flexibility that allows him to dedicate time to other endeavors, such as spending time with family and being actively involved at Rivers. Over the years, Tobin has tirelessly worked on behalf of the school and has always volunteered to tackle new challenges. Tobin is a longtime, dedicated member of the Alumni Council. During his tenure on the council, he has served on both the Executive and Nominating committees. He has also worked as a member of the Alumni Annual Fund team in addition to taking on other responsibilities.
Tobin’s greatest contribution to Rivers has been his leadership of the Rivers Golf Tournament. The tournament, which raises money for the Alumni Scholarship Fund, has experienced incredible growth in four years, going from a slight loss in 2000 to net income of nearly $47,000 in 2004. Tobin, who has chaired the tournament since its inception, was one of a small group of alumni who inaugurated what has quickly become an annual Rivers tradition. “In the first year or two, one of the biggest challenges was finding enough people to participate,” he says. “Now, there is a waiting list.”
Aside from being great for fundraising, the tournament is also an effective way to keep alumni connected to the school and each other. “This is a great way for alums with a common interest to connect,” he says. “I think it’s great to have a place where an alumnus from my decade can connect with an alumnus from the Class of ’70.”
For Tobin, keeping alums connected is a meaningful cause. “My best friends in life today are the guys I graduated with.” Tobin and many of his classmates remained in the area after college and have maintained frequent contact with each other. He explains, “Several of us were members of each other's wedding parties.
Additionally, many of us are still active in the Rivers community, whether through Alumni Council, or just playing pick-up basketball on campus.” Reflecting on this tight-knit group of alumni, Tobin believes, “it is a testament to the Rivers experience that we are all still very close.”
Tobin and friends will gather together again this spring, as the fifth annual Rivers Golf Tournament is scheduled to take place on Monday, May 16, 2005 at Charter Oak Country Club in Hudson, Mass.
