The 45th Annual Rivers School Holiday Tournament tipped off on Thursday, Dec. 18 with a pair of wins by the Rivers boys’ and girls’ varsity basketball teams and came to close on Saturday, Dec. 20 in exactly the same fashion.
The girls’ basketball team beat Phillips Academy Andover, 44-33, on Thursday evening to earn a spot in the championship game while Northfield Mount Hermon earned its spot with a 42-39 victory over Taft. The Red Wings and the Hoggers played an excellent game, but Rivers pulled away at the end to earn a 48-33 victory and their seventh consecutive Holiday Tournament girls’ championship.
Vanessa Edgehill ’16 earned MVP honors for her play throughout the tournament and was joined on the All-Tournament team by teammate Julia Thissel ’16, NMH’s Vanessa Udoji and Angelina Marazzi, and Taft’s Jalissa Rodriguez.
The boys’ basketball team played an excellent game against The Millbrook School on Thursday evening, eventually pulling out a 62-61 win thanks to some timely defense and free throws. In what was perhaps the game of the weekend, the Red Wings avenged last year’s loss in the tournament championship by knocking off Beaver Country Day School 71-65 to advance to Saturday’s final.
Rivers met The Holderness School in the championships game and got a solid effort from the entire squad to earn a 68-56 victory. Jermaine Samuels ’17 earned the tournament’s MVP award for his outstanding play in all three games.
Jermaine was joined on the All-Tournament team by teammate Azar Swain ’17, Holderness’ Thomas Jackson and Sukhmail Mathon, and Beaver’s Keyshaun Jacobs.
Thank you to all the players, coaches, fans, and volunteers who put off their winter break for a weekend in order to organize and execute another memorable Rivers Holiday Tournament! The support shown both in the gym and at The Givers Café is what makes this a great event every winter.
