Rivers’ Big Band hit it big last weekend, taking second place in the large ensemble category at the Berklee College of Music's 45th High School Jazz Festival. The competition featured 3,000 students in more than 200 bands and vocal ensembles from the United States and Puerto Rico. All ensembles at the event, the largest in the country, were assigned to a class based on size and adjudicated by a panel of Berklee's top faculty.

In addition to the Big Bands’ award, trumpeter Jamie Juviler ’14 was selected to receive the Judge’s Choice Award, recognizing the best musician in the ensemble.

“This was one of best performances yet!” commented Big Band Director Philippe Crettien. “The judges had a difficult time picking just one musician for the individual award."

Quick on the heels of the Berklee award, the Big Band received a Gold Medal at the MAJE Senior District Big Band competition on Tuesday night. Jamie Juviler, Richard Oates '14, and John Nydam '15 received MVP awards. The Band will now go on to the MAJE State Finals on March 23.
