Charity Run for Rivers Kicks Off May 22

As they might say in an ad for a blockbuster sale: Run – don’t walk!

“Well, no, you can walk, too,” said Brooke Stoller ’12, in discussing the first annual Run for Rivers that she is organizing alongside fellow Rivers running club co-founder Emily Snider ’12.

“Well, no, you can walk, too,” said Brooke Stoller ’12, in discussing the first annual Run for Rivers that she is organizing alongside fellow Rivers running club co-founder Emily Snider ’12.

Whatever you do, be sure you make it to the event, which takes place Sunday, May 22 at 11:00 a.m. and benefits the Ian Greenblatt ’04 and Ian McVey ’03 financial aid funds. (Those interested in registering should fill out this form.)

Stoller and Snider have been organizing the event for several months, working with advisor Dan McCartney, community service director Jeanette Szretter, and members of the advancement office and facilities department. “It’s been a challenge, but we knew once we got the idea that we had to go full throttle to make the possibility a reality,” said Snider.

All proceeds will go towards the two financial aid funds, which are named in memory of alumni Greenblatt and McVey. Greenblatt was a varsity soccer and lacrosse player and recipient of the Scholar-Athlete Award, while McVey was an honor roll student, two-sport athlete, and drummer in the jazz band who served as a second lieutenant in the Marines after graduating from Rivers.
“It's important that the money benefit a good cause, and one that connects back to Rivers,” Snider said. “We also want to honor those members of our community who have died, but have left a lasting impression on our school.”

The organizers are expecting upwards of 200 participants, with middle schoolers, high schoolers, parents, faculty, and alumni all taking part. The run will feature prizes, t-shirts, food, and music after the race.

“Our goal is getting the community together, and hopefully creating a Rivers tradition to come back to every year,” said Stoller.
