On Thursday afternoon, the Rivers art department showcased work from new faculty member Catelin Mathers-Suter ’97 and several seniors as part of a special art reception in the Davenport Gallery.

Seniors with art on display included Louise Blake, Leigh Carroll, Brittany Dixon, Yekaterina Gourinovitch, and Charlie Rugg. Several of them have recently won awards at such events as the Small Independent Schools Art League (SISAL) show and the Boston Globe Scholastic Art competition.

Mathers-Suter’s work highlights Rivers’ unique status as a school that has six full-time art faculty members who are all also practicing artists, frequently involved in solo and group shows. Tim Clark’s work “Dualis” was on exhibit at the Grand Theater Center for the Arts in California last year, while the work of Mathers-Suter has previously been featured in the Slate School of Fine Art in England and Kingston Gallery in Boston, among other venues.

Mathers-Suter says that her student’s pieces have inspired her own work as an artist. “These five students have affected the work that I am creating by allowing me to look at the world through their varying perspectives,” she says. “Most importantly, the students have shown me how fulfilling and important it is to be a teacher.”

Several of the students expressed their appreciation of Mathers-Suter’s encouragement with their work. “Ms. Mathers-Suter treats us like adults, showing as much confidence in us as we have in ourselves,” says Carroll. “She pushes us to succeed because she knows that we can.”
