Rivers' Artists Have Strong Showing At SISAL Arts Competition

Rivers' students demonstrated their artistic prowess in a number of different mediums at this year's SISAL competition.

Rivers' students demonstrated their artistic prowess in a number of different mediums at this year's SISAL (Small Independent School Arts League) competition. The Students won thirteen prizes including five first place awards and had sixteen pieces selected for exhibition at this year's SISAL show. This year's competition included submissions from sixteen separate schools in grades seven through twelve —including Winsor, Roxbury Latin, Bancroft, and Brimmer and May. Artwork was judged on two levels, grades seven through nine and grades ten through twelve.

Rivers' first place winners were freshman Anna Teng for an untitled pastel drawing, freshman Elizabeth Southwell for a black and white photograph entitled "Light Dance," junior Charles Rugg for a pencil drawing entitled "The Blueprint," junior Leigh Carroll for a print entitled "The Kiss," and senior Molly Troy for a ceramic piece entitled "Piece of Mind."

There were four third place prizes awarded and the winners included freshman Caroline Brustowicz for a ceramic piece entitled "Song Bird," junior Louise Blake for a for an oil painting entitled "Pond," senior Janine Doherty for an ink drawing entitled "Self-Portrait 1," and senior Julia Bateman for a black and white photo entitled "Contrasting Limbs."

Four students earned honorable mentions, including seventh grader Gabriella Salerno for a print entitled "Ocean Sun," freshman Alejandra Rojo for a black and white photograph entitled "Nocturnal Passage," senior Matthew Burlingham for a ceramic piece entitled "Spring Awakening," and senior Sarah Weintraub for a digital photo entitled "Masquerade."

"We are proud to have thirteen of our student artists honored in this year's SISAL show and thrilled that five Rivers' students earned the first prizes in categories ranging from printmaking, drawing, pastel, ceramics and photography,” said Art Department Chair David Saul.

A reception will be held this Sunday, April 27 from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. at The Brimmer and May School, with the awards ceremony beginning at 2:00 p.m.
