Rivers Boys' Lacrosse and Girls' Softball Off To Great Start
Girls' softball continued to bring home the wins by beating the Brimmer and May School 13-2 on April 13. Senior Hillary Ain pitched seven innings and struck out 12 batters.
Softball Girls' softball continued to bring home the wins by beating the Brimmer and May School 13-2 on April 13. Senior Hillary Ain pitched seven innings and struck out 12 batters. The momentum continued with a big win over ISL opponent Thayer Academy on April 14 to bring the Red Wings record to 3-1. Sophomore Emily Creedon had three key hits including a home run and five RBIs.
Boys' Lacrosse Red Wings lacrosse continued their winning streak with two big ISL wins. Beating Thayer Academy 6-1 on April 14, Rivers gained a decisive advantage in the first half that proved too much for Thayer to overcome. Senior Billy McNamara had three goals and one assist while senior co-captain Mark Goodrich had one goal and three assists. Junior Michael Jordan also had three goals and one assist. Other scorers included junior Zachary Weeden (one goal, one assist), junior Ian Bain (one goal, one assist), and sophomore Mark Cornacchio (one goal).
On April 18, Rivers played the Brooks School and took home a solid 14-9 victory. Leading scorers included Jordan (four goals, three assists), Goodrich (three goals, three assists), freshman John Fitzgerald (two goals), Cornacchio (two goals), and junior Zachary Weeden (two goals). Senior co-captain J.J. Strombosky played a solid game in goal with 14 saves.
Baseball Red Wings baseball defeated Brimmer and May on April 13 with every member of the team contributing to the win. Junior Brian McNulty went two for two at the plate, scored twice and had three RBIs. Senior Brett Deware had three stolen bases, while junior pitcher Henry Eisenhart faced 12 batters and struck out six. Freshman Tim Corey closed the game for Rivers.
On April 14, Rivers faced a strong hitting Thayer Academy and after a hard fought struggle, came up short losing 12-8. Thayer opened the game scoring three runs in the first, but Rivers responded by scoring three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. Deware, senior Chris Sullivan, sophomore Bryan Ginsberg, senior Gus Brewer, and junior Ben Kitendaugh all contributed on offense. Thayer scored twice in the second, but Rivers overcame them and ended the inning by taking the lead 7-5. Thayer tied the game in the 4th but Rivers managed again to pull ahead 8-7. Thayer eventually pulled away to win the game. Deware had two stolen bases and struck out four batters while pitching five innings. Brewer went three for three at the plate and had three RBIs, while Ginsberg went two for three and had two RBIs. Kitendaugh shined on offense as well with a stolen base and two RBIs.
Girls' Lacrosse On April 18, girls' lacrosse faced a challenging Brooks School team and came up short losing 12-7. Although behind 7-2 at the half, Rivers continued to play a strong defensive game and held their own in the second half. Sophomore Jillian Dempsey had three goals and three assists for the Red Wings.
Track On April 14, the girls' and boys' track teams traveled to St. Paul's School in Concord, NH for the Pelican Relays. Junior Julian Zeng finished second in the high jump while the Boys' Spring Medley Relay team of seniors Rob Shanfeld and Eddie Benjamin, junior Grady O'Brien and Zeng finished in third place. In addition, the Girls' Sprint Medley Relay team also finished in third place.
The Rivers track team hosted their first-ever home track event on April 18 at Weston High School. Rivers hosted BB&N, Middlesex School and Roxbury Latin. Zeng came in first place in the high jump while the boys’ 4x100m relay that included junior Jeff Nguyen, Benjamin, O'Brien, and Zeng came in second. O'Brien came in second place in both the boys' 110m high hurdles and 300m intermediate hurdles. In the boys' 3000m sophomore David Shapiro came in second while sophomore Jonathan Cryan finished third. The girls' team also had a solid day and took home a total of seven first place finishes out of 16 events. In the girls' javelin, freshman Liz Dalton came in first while senior Alylssa Kaitz finished third. Junior Michelle Davis finished first in the girls' high jump while freshman Grace Robinson finished second. Freshman Caroline Bullion finished first in both the 100m high and 300m intermediate hurdles. Junior Caite Cutler finished first in the 800m race while sophomore Louise Blake finished first in the 3000m race. The Rivers girls' team came away with a total of 66 points to secure the win.
