Rivers' student run newspaper, The Edge, recently received a gold medal from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association, a premier award for high school journalism sponsored by Columbia University. In order to earn the gold medal, The Edge received 935 points out of a possible 1,000.

The competition included entries from both public and private high schools across the country and required the schools to submit five different issues of their newspapers from the 2005-2006 academic year. Judges scored the high school papers based on categories that included writing, photography and news coverage.

"It's both exciting and impressive that The Edge scored so well considering it was up against a lot of larger public schools," said Edge Co-Editor senior Justin Tardiff. "Receiving such a prestigious award is a huge honor for the entire Edge staff."

Judges sent Rivers a lengthy critique of The Edge that praised the paper for the quality of the writing and highlighted it as "a real strength". They were also impressed with the maturity of the writers who appeared in the op/ed section. The Edge is now eligible to move on to the Crown Awards, the highest honor, which will be given out in January.

"Putting out each issue requires a real team effort and our editorial staff, especially our co-editors, Justin and Alexandra, work with our contributing writers to make it happen," said Edge advisor Alex Stephens.

Current seniors and members of The Edge staff responsible for last year's issues include co-editors Alexandra Byer and Justin Tardiff as well as Ari Comart, Steve Rizoli, Katie Muto, Ally Warshaver, Will Quayle, and Alex and Sam Harrison. Junior Lindsay Bloom was also on last year's staff.
