Rivers Football and Girls' Cross Country Take Home Big ISL Wins

Rivers' football took on The Groton School on Saturday and brought home an exciting 24-21 victory.

Rivers' football took on The Groton School on Saturday and brought home an exciting 24-21 victory. Although the Red Wings were winning 14-7 at the half, Groton came back strong to lead Rivers 21-14 at the beginning of the fourth quarter. With only four minutes left in the game, Rivers scored their second touchdown to tie the game. Then, with two minutes left to play, Rivers' defense got an interception that put them in field goal range. Senior Sam Harrison, responsible for the team's extra points, kicked the winning field goal. Rivers quarterback, junior Sean McGahan was responsible for both touchdowns and rushed over 100 yards. He threw 8 passes and completed 7 for 95 yards.

Cross Country
On Saturday, Rivers cross country traveled to Lawrence Academy to run against both Lawrence Academy and Westford Academy. Despite a difficult course and having to compete in all positions, the girls brought home their first victory of the season by defeating Lawrence Academy 27 to 30. Even without one of their top scoring runners, the girls came together as a team to secure the win. Three outstanding sophomores led the team. Jenn Pollan was Rivers' first runner to cross the finish line, coming in 6th place overall and 2nd place against Lawrence Academy, Louise Blake finished in 10th place overall and 3rd against Lawrence Academy and Leigh Carroll finished in 12th place overall and 5th against Lawrence Academy. In addition, juniors Rebecca Burns and Lori Suvajian finished as Rivers' 4th and 5th runners while sophomores Rebecca Yau and Rachel Howe rounded out the team's finishers by placing ahead of Lawrence's 5th and final scoring runner. Burns finished in 19th place overall (8th against Lawrence Academy) and Suvajian finished in 20th place overall (9th against Lawrence Academy). Yau and Howe finished in 22nd and 25th place respectively overall (10th and 11th against Lawrence Academy). Sophomore Alexa Kopelman also ran a strong race, finishing as Rivers' 8th runner.

Wesftord Academy had an exceptionally strong team and defeated Rivers 16-47 and downed Lawrence 20 -43.

The boys' cross country team came up short and lost a close race to Lawrence Academy 24-33. Sophomore David Shapiro had another great race and finished 2nd on a tough course with a time of 18:14. Sophomore Cam Griffith was the next Red Wing runner to cross the finish line at 18:48. Sophomore Jonathan Cryan ran very well and finished with a time of 19:24 while senior William Quayle came in right behind Cryan with a time of 19:26.



Field Hockey
In a well-played game against The Groton School on Saturday, October 21, Rivers came up short and lost 2-1. The game was very evenly matched and the score was tied at 0-0 at the half. Groton came on strong scoring two in a row but Rivers answered quickly with a goal scored by junior Darcy Randall. Sophomore Jacqueline Gannon had the assist and Red Wings goalie, junior Juliana Horn, had a great game in goal with 6 saves.

Girls' Soccer
On Wednesday, October 18, the Red Wings took on a challenging Governor's Academy team and lost 2-1. In this well matched game, all goals were scored on corner kicks and both teams had 15 shots each on goal. Sophomore Adrienne Anderson had Rivers' only goal.

This Saturday, the girls played The Groton School on their home field and won 3-0. The game was scoreless until the second half when Anderson, in a beautiful 1 vs. 1 move, put the ball into the goal. Junior Nicole Stenquist scored the second goal with an assist by senior Anna Crystal. Freshman Emily Hoberman scored the final goal of the game with an assist by Stenquist. The team, as whole, played exceptional defense to hold Groton scoreless.
