This weekend, Rivers alumni, parents, faculty and students showed their school spirit by cheering on the Red Wings at Homecoming 2006. Rivers cross country kicked off the weekend with a dual meet against St. Mark's on Friday. On Saturday, Rivers boys' and girls' soccer, field hockey and football all took on Lawrence Academy.
Cross Country Although both the boys' and the girls' teams came up short, many Rivers runners had very good performances. Sophomore Jennifer Pollan finished 3rd overall to lead the team with a personal best time of 22:07. Sophomores Louise Blake and Leigh Carroll came in 5th and 6th place with personal best times of 23:33 and 23:42 respectively. Sophomore Kate Voorhes, returning from rehab, also finished with a personal best time of 24:51. The final team score was 22-34.
In the boys' race, sophomore David Shapiro had a lifetime personal best in the 5K and came in 3rd overall with a time of 18:07. Sophomore Cam Griffith crossed the finish line next for the Red Wings and ran his personal best race at 18:47. Despite an 18-43 loss, the team ran very well and showed real progress.
Boys' Soccer Rivers boys' soccer came out ready to win and defeated Lawrence Academy 2-0. Sophomore Charles Rugg scored both goals for the Red Wings while juniors Grady O'Brien and Sam Masur had an assist each. Rivers goalie Adam-Ridgely Khaw had a stellar game in goal and was able to keep Lawrence from scoring.
Field Hockey Field Hockey played with strong determination and beat I.S.L #3 ranked Lawrence Academy 2-0. Senior Lisa Bossange scored the first goal when she knocked a rebounding ball off of senior Stephanie Shaw into the goal. Lawrence fought back, taking the momentum away from the Red Wings for the rest of the first half. Rivers, however, continued to display incredible teamwork in the second half of the game. Bossange once again drove in a goal to clinch the 2-0 win. Lawrence was unable to score thanks to the efforts of junior Julianna Horn who had 8 saves in goal for the shutout. Along with Horn, juniors Kendall Todd and Manya Steinfeld successfully led the team's defensive effort.
Girls' Soccer The girls' soccer team ended their recent scoring drought by beating Lawrence Academy 4-0. Sophomores Adrienne Anderson and Megan Delaney were an offensive force as Anderson assisted Delaney's first goal of the game. The second goal was scored by junior Nicole Stenquist who also assisted Page with a cross pass that enabled her to score the third goal for the Red Wings. The girls continued to dominate throughout the second half of the game and Anderson scored the final goal with only seven minutes left to play.
Football Loyal Rivers fans flocked to Natick High School on Saturday evening to watch Rivers football take on Lawrence Academy under the lights. Despite a tough loss against a strong Lawrence squad, Red Wings' players showed grit and determination. Senior Mark Goodrich had two interceptions and senior Cherron Kerr scored a touchdown while Senior Sam Harrison added the extra-point.
