A former art teacher, coach, business manager and founder of The Rivers Day Camp, Mr. Licht left an indelible mark on generations of Rivers teachers, students, coaches, and campers.
Before joining the Rivers community, Mr. Licht served for over four years in the U.S. Coast Guard in both the European and Pacific Theaters during World War II.
Mr. Licht started his career at Rivers as chair of the art department in September 1947 and eagerly took on multiple roles and responsibilities. From teaching, to coaching, to founding and running The Rivers Day Camp, Licht touched the lives of thousands of students and campers with his compassionate demeanor, high energy and his ability to help youths exceed expectations.
Together with his son Mark ’64, the camp’s current executive director, Mr. Licht was dedicated to improving the camp by adding facilities and streamlining the program. In addition, his wife Cee Licht, also served an important role as the first director of the Junior Camp.
"He'll always be remembered for his ability under pressure in his busy schedule to stop and give you a kind word," said Mark Licht '64 about his father in a 1997 interview for the Riparian. "He always had time for everyone. I think that's important because sometimes you get lost in the shuffle. Sometimes you just need someone to say, 'that's good.'"
