Working as a part of Crossroads’ Youth and Community Initiative in partnership with the Crossroads Community Foundation, Rivers students were trained in the art of philanthropy and were empowered to give away $10,000 MetroWest youth organizations. The Rivers School raised $2,500 for the project, which was matched with $7,500 from Crossroads.

Fourteen Rivers students participated and dubbed themselves the “Rivers Givers.” Throughout the fall, the students met to learn about the grant-making process. Crossroads staff trained them in how to evaluate needs assessments, review budgets and use the funding criteria to choose the best proposals.

Following the training, Crossroads gave the students 14 proposals received by the foundation. All funding requests were for “services and activities that improve and enrich the lives of Metrowest children and youth.” The students narrowed down the proposals to seven semi-finalists. They then reviewed those proposals again and selected three organizations to fund. Then, they presented those recommendations to Crossroads’ Distribution Committee, the group charged with awarding the foundation’s discretionary grants. The Committee accepted those recommendations and presented them to Crossroads’ Board of Trustees for their approval on December 10.

The following organizations received funding:

Boston Institute for Arts Therapy in Boston: $4,000 to bring CHAMPS! Children Have Arts and Music Programs, an after-school music therapy program for children with disabilities, to the Natick/Framingham area.

Greater Marlboro Programs in Marlborough: $4,000 to fund a Recreational Expressive Arts Therapy (REAP) program for youths ages eight to eighteen with mental retardation or other related developmental disabilities.

Parents Association of The Handicapped (PATH) in Natick: $2,016 to expand the teenage volunteer program by hiring a Youth Volunteer Coordinator at Camp Arrowhead.

The project will conclude when the students present checks to the three organizations at a special grant presentation ceremony, to be held at an assembly in February.
