Rivers Honors Spring Student-Athletes

Five student-athletes from The Rivers School were named All-New England All Stars for the spring season, and thirteen earned honors in the Independent School League (ISL). In addition, athletes from each of the spring sports teams received special awards from their coaches.

Girls' Lacrosse

The Rivers girls' lacrosse team received the ISL Team Sportsmanship Award, which is "awarded to the team that, in the eyes of its opponents best exemplifies the ideals of integrity, sportsmanship and fair play."

Sophomore Jillian Dempsey received the Most Improved Player Award, given to that player of the girls' lacrosse team who has shown the most improvement over the course of the season.

Senior Tessa Drake received the Team Player Award. This award is given to that player of the Girls' Lacrosse Team who, through her unselfish and dedicated play, demonstrates the ideals of a Rivers athlete: persistence, diligence and the pursuit of excellence. In addition, Drake was named a New England All-Star.

Junior Allison Page earned an ISL All-League Honorable Mention. Seniors Elissa Bullion and Catherine Stolle Singleton received the Scholar-Athlete Award, which is presented to varsity student athletes who have lettered in two varsity sports and maintained an average of B+ or better during the same academic year.

Boys' Lacrosse

The Rivers boys' lacrosse team had the most wins in the school's history and ended the season with a 12-3 record.

Team tri-captain and senior Peter Sessa received the Ferris Thomsen Jr. Award, given to that senior who shows the most improvement, enthusiasm and overall value to the team. Sessa also received the ISL All-League Award and was named a New England All-Star.

Senior Zach Bain received the Most Valuable Player Award, given to that player who made the most significant contributions to the team and who the coaches believe made the team stronger because of the recipients' involvement. Bain also received the ISL All-League Award and was named a New England All-Star. In addition, Bain received the Scholar-Athlete Award.

Senior and tri-captain Tim Bigelow was a two time ISL leader in assists and received the ISL All-League Award.

Senior tri-captain Stephen Belichick as well as juniors Mark Eaton and Mark Goodrich, earned ISL All-League Honorable Mentions.

Bigelow and teammate, senior Evan K. O'Brien, received the Matthew S. Epstein '89 Award for Exceptional Dedication to Athletics.

Girls' Tennis

Senior captain Tara Davidson received the Tozzer Tennis Award. The award is given annually to the member of the Rivers varsity tennis team whose determination and mental discipline together with a sense of fair play have brought integrity and respect to Rivers, herself and tennis. Davidson also received the ISL All-League Award, the Scholar-Athlete Award and the Matthew S. Epstein '89 Award for Exceptional Dedication to Athletics.

Junior Katie Muto received the Coach's Award, in recognition of team spirit, coachability, effort, positive attitude and sportsmanship.

Senior Shannon Merrell received the Scholar-Athlete Award.

Boys' Tennis

This spring, the Rivers boys' tennis team won their third New England Championship in four years.

Senior Nadeem Haque received the Tozzer Tennis Award. This award is given annually to the member of the Rivers varsity tennis team whose determination and mental discipline together with a sense of fair play have brought integrity and respect to Rivers, himself and tennis. Haque also received the Scholar-Athlete Award.

Senior Ian Box received the Most Valuable Player Award and earned an ISL All-League Honorable Mention.

Golf

Freshman Kim Stevenson received the Charles R. Metchear, III Award. This award is given annually to that member of the varsity golf team, who by his high standard of desire, perseverance and good sportsmanship has made an exceptional contribution to the team.

Sophomore Jeff Devereux received The Coach's Award, which is given to the player on the varsity golf team who has exhibited a particularly competitive spirit and perseverance throughout the season.

Baseball

Senior co-captain Scott Barchard received the Andrew N. Navoni Award. This award is presented annually to the member of the varsity baseball team who best exemplifies the qualities of leadership, superior sportsmanship, total dedication and desire for competitive excellence. Barchard also earned the Matthew S. Epstein '89 Award for Exceptional Dedication to Athletics.

Junior Gus Brewer received the Most Improved Player Award and earned the ISL All-League Award.

Senior co-captain William Lawton earned an ISL All-League Honorable Mention. Lawton also received the Scholar-Athlete Award and the Matthew S. Epstein '89 Award for Exceptional Dedication to Athletics.

Senior Samuel Perrone received the Scholar-Athlete Award and the Matthew S. Epstein '89 Award for Exceptional Dedication to Athletics.

Softball

Senior co-captain Desiree DiIesso received the Most Valuable Player Award, which is given to a team oriented leader and a player who leads by example by being prepared to give her best effort every day. DiIesso also earned the ISL All-League Award as well as the Matthew S. Epstein '89 Award for Exceptional Dedication to Athletics.

Senior co-captain Kara Sullivan earned the Scholar-Athlete Award.

Freshman Megan Delaney received the Coaches' Award, which is given to the player who gives 100% effort every day and is willing to play any position in order to help the team. Delaney earned an ISL All-League Honorable Mention.

Track

Tri-captains and seniors Heather Maytham, Sophia Janowitz and Nathaniel Biagetti received the Coaches' Leadership Award. Both Janowitz and Maytham received the Scholar-Athlete Award.

Sophomore Katharina Kroll received the Outstanding Athlete Award for consistent excellence in both training and competition. In addition, she is the New England Prep School Track Association Division III Javelin Champion. Kroll earned an ISL All-League Honorable Mention.
