Rivers Students Fight Cybercrime

With the help of visiting speaker Parry Aftab, a leading expert on cybercrime, Internet privacy and cyber-abuse, Upper School students began to brainstorm ways they could educate their peers about the dangers of Internet predators. As Aftab spoke to a packed auditorium on May 11, she asked the students for their help in the fight against cybercrime.

"The idea is not to turn off technology but to get younger kids to use it in safer ways. Can you guys help me with that?" asked Aftab as she addressed the Upper School. "I need an army of kids who can stick up for and represent one another."

Through anecdotes about the realities of cybercrime and cyber-bullying, Aftab grabbed the audience's attention and sparked the students' interests in the ways they can get involved on a local level and within the Rivers community.

Sophomore Sarah Weintraub, ready to take action, volunteered an idea of how to help. "We could get some local celebrities or bands to get the word out since kids really look up to those people and will listen to them."

Even after the program ended, Rivers students rushed the stage to share their thoughts with Aftab and sign up for Aftab's volunteer cybercrime fighting program, Teenangels.

Junior Nikki Schuster and others are eager to get involved. "I think Rivers students should be trained to teach younger kids about Internet dangers and then take the program to other ISL schools. We really need to spread the word throughout our community."

In a separate program on May 10, Aftab also addressed Rivers parents and stressed that although parents need to be aware of the issues, it's the kids' involvement that really matters the most.
