Student Publication Honored

The Current has been judged the best student literary magazine in Massachusetts.
The Current has been judged the best student literary magazine in Massachusetts. The spring 2005 edition has earned the only "superior" rating in Massachusetts from the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE).

The NCTE competition, with entries from 486 schools, evaluates literary content as well as design and graphics. Judges award a superior ranking only if a publication shows "outstanding writing, meticulous editing, unifying design, high-quality graphics" and excellence in other criteria.

The Current is Rivers' student-run magazine that showcases poetry, prose, photography and other visual artwork. Student editors for the 2005 magazine were Katherine Brustowicz and Whit Haynes, both of whom graduated last year. The staff included Stolle Singleton, Kelsey Merriam, Casey James, Sam Swan, Laura Bellucci, Eddie Benjamin and Sarah Weintraub. Merriam and Singleton are editors for the upcoming 2006 edition.

"I'm delighted that The Current team has been recognized with such high praise," said Jullian Willard, English teacher and faculty advisor to the magazine. "The NCTE heralded our magazine from among 486 school literary magazines for outstanding writing, and that's really something to be excited about. Rivers students are capable of great things."

Last fall The Columbia Scholastic Press Association also cited The Current for excellence. The 2005 edition won a bronze medal in the CSPA's prestigious nation-wide competition.
