Rivers Skaters Win Hockey Honors

Jillian Dempsey, Caitlin Walsh and Lauren Glynn, with their Assabet Valley team, took the 2006 national championship in the girls 14 and under division, beating Honeybaked of Michigan 2-1 in the finals April 2. Dempsey shot the game winner on a pass from Walsh.

Assabet went 6-0-0 in the tournament. Dempsey finished tied for the tournament scoring lead with nine points, and Walsh tied for third place with six points.

Dempsey, who received All Independent School League honors for her play with Rivers this winter, took top honors in USA Hockey’s individual skills competition for girls 14 and under. The skills competition includes speed, puck relay, catch and shoot, and breakaway challenge.

Rivers teachers Melissa Dolan and Whitney Robbins helped their Needham team to the USA Hockey national championship in the women's senior A division March 24-26.

Dolan, a defenseman, and Robbins, who skates right wing, played five games in three days in their championship run in the Amherst Pepsi Center in Buffalo. Their team went 5-0-0 in the tournament, registering two shutouts and scoring a total of 19 goals. Needham won the championship game 3-0 against Minnesota.

Robbins teaches art and Dolan teaches English, both in the Middle School. Like their Needham teammates, both played Division I hockey in college.
