Rivers senior goalie Scott Barchard was named to the all-tournament team for the second consecutive year at the Stanstead Invitational Hockey Tournament in Quebec last weekend. His saves helped the boys' varsity team notch a tie and two wins to capture their division before losing in the semi-finals to host Stanstead College.

Coach Scott Sanders noted that the intensity of play at the Canadian tournament gave his players excellent experience in addition to their success. Rivers’ victory over Kent’s Hill School of Maine included goals by seniors Tim Bigelow and Evan O’Brien. In the 5-1 win over Loyola of Quebec, O’Brien scored four goals and Ben Woodruff added another.

Earlier, Rivers beat North Yarmouth Academy in Maine 3-2 on Jan. 4. After a slow start by Rivers, Bigelow tied the game 1-1 in the second period with assists from O'Brien and Colin Butler. NYA responded with a power play and another score.

Rivers came out flying in the third period, and O'Brien made a shot from the point to tie the game. Chris Sullivan then gave Rivers the lead for good with an end-to-end rush that was the lift the team needed. O'Brien added a late goal on a breakaway to seal the win.

Girls' Basketball

Rivers varsity girls' basketball team improved its record to 5-3 with wins over Beaver Country Day School and The Wheeler School of Providence last week. The Red Wings’ 45-18 victory over Beaver Friday was sparked by sophomore guard Anna Littman-Quinn’s 17 points. Christine Chace, another sophomore, contributed a career-high eight points.

The girls beat Wheeler 32-27 on Saturday, with Littman-Quinn again the leading scorer at 14 points. Senior Meryl Gold had a strong game coming off the bench, and eight Rivers players scored.

The team lost 41-55 to St. George’s School on Jan. 4. St. George’s is undefeated in the Independent School League. Ten players scored for Rivers.

Rivers boys' varsity basketball team beat St. George’s School 50-46 in Rhode Island on Jan. 4. Senior co-captain B. J. Dunne scored 16 points, as did junior guard Cherron Kerr. In the second half Kerr shot seven of eight free throws.

Dunne again logged 16 points and senior co-captain Jamal Jackson made 13 rebounds in a losing effort on Friday against Buckingham, Brown & Nichols at home. Andrew McCarthy led BB&N with 12 points in their 46-34 win.

Girls' Hockey

In a hard fought game on home ice Saturday, Brooks School overcame Rivers girls' varsity hockey team in the final seconds, resulting in a 1-2 loss.

Both teams were held scoreless through the first period. Rivers freshman Jillian Dempsey put home the first goal midway through the second period with an assist from sophomore Darcy Randall. Brooks pulled even with eight minutes to play in the third, and scored on a power play with 22 seconds left in the game. Bridget Parker, goalie for the Red Wings, made 39 saves in the loss.

On Wednesday Rivers was shut out by an experienced and competitive Noble and Greenough team 5-0. Parker’s play was again important as she made 41 saves. In the final 25 minutes Rivers girls shut down Nobles' scoring.
