In a contest decided in the final seconds, Rivers claimed the boys' championship of the 36th annual Rivers Holiday Tournament Saturday. The girls' title went to Kimball Union Academy in another hard-fought championship game.
Rivers' B. J. Dunne was named the tournament's most valuable player for the boys', and Laura Calder of Kimball Union took MVP honors for the girls'.
The final games capped three days of competitive independent school basketball in the Benson Gymnasium in the MacDowell Athletic Center at Rivers. Four girls teams and eight boys teams participated in the Dec. 15-17 tournament.
Named to the boys' all-tournament team were Jamal Jackson of The Rivers School, Greg Jacques of St. Sebastian's School, Sean Watlington of Millbrook School, and Andrew McCarthy of Buckingham Browne & Nichols School.
The girls' all-tournament team included Anna Littman-Quinn of Rivers, Quinn Sendall of Kimball Union, Kyla Cook of Middlesex School and Carrie Bauer of Dana Hall School.
In the championship games Kimball Union's girls beat Rivers 52 to 41, and Rivers boys' edged out St. Sebastian's 49 to 48.
St. Sebastian's led most of the first half, but Rivers came back to tie the game at 20 by halftime. Rivers' shooting topped 60 percent in the second half, building a 13-point lead. The Red Wings went scoreless in the last three minutes of the game, and St. Sebastian's came back within one point. With less than five seconds remaining, Rivers junior Cherron Kerr stole the ball to seal the win.
Rivers seniors Dunne and Jackson were the team's two leading scorers and also combined for 22 of the team's 28 rebounds.
