Two Rivers soccer alums are tearing up the turf at Wheaton College. James Greenslit '02, a senior at Wheaton, earned his second-straight New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Player of the Year award for his work on the soccer field at Wheaton. Dan Lane ’04, a freshman at Wheaton, was named the conference's top rookie.
In addition, Greenslit and Lane also earned all-conference first team citations. And, Greenslit grabbed a spot on the first team for the third consecutive fall and is the captain of the team.
"I'm incredibly proud of these two kids and what they've done at Wheaton," said Rivers head soccer coach Bob Pipe. "They are great players, and it's great to see them have success at the next level."
Greenslit joins one other player as the only two-time NEWMAC Player of the Year. This marked the seventh time in eight seasons a Wheaton player was named the league's top player, and Lane became the second Wheaton player to win rookie-of-the-year honors.
Greenslit has been a catalyst for Wheaton's record-setting defense this season, as the team posted a 0.62 goals against average and allowed just 12 goals, both of which would be program bests, and their 0.865 save percentage would be second. Wheaton also has 10 shutouts heading into the NCAA Tournament.
Lane put together one of the most productive offensive seasons in Wheaton soccer history and broke the school's goals and points records for a freshman. His 13 goals are tied for fifth in a season at Wheaton, and Lane is one point shy of becoming the ninth player with 30 points. Lane has contributed in 16 of the team's 34 goals. He has netted seven go-ahead goals, five of which held up as game-winners, while assisting on two game-winning tallies. Lane has been held without a point only five times this season and recorded a seven-game points streak during the middle of the season.
At Rivers, Greenslit and Lane helped the Rivers varsity boys’ soccer team bring home its first-ever Class A New England Championship title in 2001 after stunning the defending champion and undefeated Loomis Chaffee School (Windsor, Conn.) 1-0 at the Brooks School in North Andover. The win topped a record-breaking season for the team, which also captured its first-ever ISL championship. Greenslit was named to the All-ISL first team and All-State that year and captained the baseball and basketball teams at Rivers, as well. In addition, Greenslit was named a recipient of the Rivers Senior Award for Exceptional Dedication to Athletics, given in memory of Matthew S. Epstein, Class of 1989.
