Despite a tough loss to Brooks on the road on Oct. 5, the Rivers girls’ soccer team is fourth in the ISL thanks to a 5-2-1 start. Rivers lost to Brooks 5-1, with junior Jen Grabler, who has four goals for Rivers this season, scoring Rivers’ only goal.
In a huge win for Rivers on Oct. 2, the girls beat Thayer 2-1. Junior Maggie Petri, who has four goals and four assists this season, scored both goals for the team. On the game-winning goal, sophomore Victoria Russell stepped up with an assist. Goalkeeper Sarah Amtower, a junior, was outstanding in the goal. The entire defensive squad had a great game, including junior Lisa Bilow, senior Meaghen Walsh, freshman Des DiIeso, and freshman Meryl Gold.
On Sept. 30, the girls tied Falmouth Academy 2-2. Grabler scored one goal for Rivers, and sophomore Katherine Brustowicz scored the other.
Boys’ Soccer
The Rivers boys’ soccer team beat Thayer, 1-0, on the road on Oct. 2. Senior Van Haskell netted the lone goal off an assist by freshman Derek Stenquist.
Football
The Rivers football team lost to Brooks on Oct. 5, 34-28, with senior quarterback David Donahue leading the squad with three rushing touchdowns. Donahue had 13 rushes for 125 yards and completed 5 out of 7 passes for 62 yards.
Junior Jack Maloney scored a touchdown on an 11-yard pass from Donahue. He also had two receptions for 17 yards and a rush for 12 yards. Kicker Adam Rutherford, a junior, went 4-4 on extra points. Senior Tony Garcia had 12 rushes for 44 yards. Sophomore Alex Saunders left the game with a high ankle sprain after completing 8 rushes for 30 yards.
Field Hockey
The Rivers field hockey team tied visiting Pingree 2-2 on Sept. 30. Senior Maria Dewees scored both goals at the left post. Dewees scored Rivers’ first goal off a pass from junior Annie Weiss in the first half. Down 2-1 at the half, Rivers was able to regroup and tie the score in the second. Dewees put another in the net, this time off an assist by junior Ali Krotinger. Senior Charlotte Rutherfurd, and Krotinger, who moved into the midfield at the half, played great defense to keep the game close.
