Rivers senior Todd Rizley was among 10 students selected in the semifinal competition of the 22nd Annual High School Shakespeare Competition at the National Heritage Museum in Lexington Saturday. He will compete in Sunday’s regional finals at First and Second Church on Marlborough Street in Boston.

The competition, part of a nationwide event sponsored each year by the English Speaking Union of the United States, requires participants to recite a Shakespeare sonnet and to perform a character monologue of their choice.

Rizley is well known to Rivers theater goers as the aging Odysseus in "The Odyssey," the devilish Mr. Applegate in "Damn Yankees," and the conflicted Rev. Moore in "Footloose." He is also seen on stage often as a jazz bassist. He has chosen Shylock's "I am a Jew" speech from "Merchant of Venice" as his monologue.

The winner of the finals competition in Boston will compete at the National Shakespeare Competition in New York City April 23-26. The national winner will receive a summer Shakespeare study tour of Britain.
