Girls’ Varsity Hockey Team Celebrates Win

The Rivers School varsity girls’ hockey team celebrated two great accomplishments on Dec. 8. One was its first game as a varsity team at Rivers and the other was a stunning 8-0 shutout over Pingree.
The Rivers School varsity girls’ hockey team celebrated two great accomplishments on Dec. 8. One was its first game as a varsity team at Rivers and the other was a stunning 8-0 shutout over Pingree.

Last year, Rivers fielded its first girls’ hockey team, a junior varsity program. This year’s full-fledged varsity squad is teeming with talent and ready to be competitive. Rivers now boasts a full hockey program with middle school, junior varsity and varsity teams for both boys and girls.

Boys’ Hockey
The Rivers varsity boys’ hockey team beat visiting Groton 2-1 on Dec. 11 in overtime. Senior Will Cushing scored the winning goal for the Red Wings.

Rivers lost their opening game 4-1 to St. George’s. Junior Scott Barchard was outstanding in goal for Rivers, stopping more than 50 shots. Senior Brian Sullivan scored Rivers’ goal.

Girls’ Basketball
The girls’ varsity basketball team beat Groton 50-28 on Dec. 8 in its home opener. Junior Meryl Gold had a team-high 10 points for Rivers. Senior captain Jaclyn Kline had seven points and contributed an outstanding effort on defense. Freshman Anna Littman-Quinn had seven points.

Boys’ Basketball
The boys’ varsity basketball team fell to St. Marks 59-45 in its home opener. Senior Sean O’Brien put up a team-high 17 points. Junior Jamal Jackson contributed 12 points.

On Dec. 8, the team lost to Belmont Hill 54-42. O’Brien had 15 points and junior B.J. Dunne contributed seven.
