Early Childhood Education

Because young children first learn through experience and discovery, we strongly recommend that they begin their musical training by participating in playful--but purposeful--group classes involving singing, listening, rhythmic activities, and other musical movement. By experiencing rhythm, pitch, and creative musical expression through their own bodies, they gain a broad foundation for further musical development and are better prepared to focus on the specific technical skills involved in playing one particular instrument. The Early Education Department offers classes for three to eight year-olds.
  • Dalcroze Eurhythmics

    Eurhythmics I
Developed by Emile Jacques-Dalcroze at the turn of the century, Eurhythmics is designed to teach music to children through the "muscular sense," by teaching rhythmic movement of the whole body. Eurhythmics is particularly appropriate for young children because they naturally learn best by doing and experiencing. Children move together as a group with free movement expression in response to the musical events presented by the teacher. Eurhythmics classes emphasize individual expression and creativity. Children sing, play rhythm instruments, and are introduced to solfege syllables and ear-training.

  • Marimba Magic® Musicianship Training

Marimba Magic® Musicianship training for 5- to 7-year-olds is an exciting hands-on introduction to musical skills. A small group of musically gifted and motivated students are chosen to be part of this ensemble. Students play written pieces from Marimba Magic Book I on beautiful marimbas (xylophones) and develop facility for the keyboard. Playing congo drums further enhances excellent rhythmic skills and right-left-hand coordination. Improvisation and composition is an integral part of the curriculum, with students developing an understanding of musical elements through their own explorations. Marimba Magic® II and III are sequential classes in which students play scales, transpose, improvise on chords, compose, and perform in an ensemble. The ensembles perform on stage.
