PHILANTHROPY

Rivers seeks to instill in its students the desire to help create a more just and equitable society, and encourages students to fulfill that desire by participating in hands-on community engagement, advocacy, and awareness-raising efforts as well as by donating money to causes that they care about. Rivers maximizes and centralizes fundraising efforts through Rivers Givers, and students can also apply to create fundraisers and donation drives at Rivers, as long as there is an awareness-raising component.

The Rivers Givers Youth in Philanthropy Program
This unique program has 30+ self selected students in Grade 11 complete a curriculum about philanthropy, which is led by chosen senior leaders who completed the program and leader training. The curriculum explores philanthropy, how the non profit, government and corporate giving world works, and how to read proposals and budgets. Students  raise money, solicit RFPs, and choose local non-profits to fund. Rivers Givers research into non profits culminates in a site visit day to organizations seeking funding. 43+ Agencies have been funded from 2007 – 2019.
Rivers Givers presented at the National Service Learning Conference in 2016, and were featured on NBC10 in Oct 2018
