What activities are you involved in at Rivers?I am part of the Middle School book club, the jazz band, and the cross country team. I also became a Red Key tour guide in the beginning of eighth grade.
What is your favorite class?
My favorite class is art with Mr. Love, because of all the different art mediums we get to
try out. Mr. Love is one of the really amazing teachers here at Rivers. He is a great teacher, really enthusiastic about what he does.
What three words do you associate with Rivers?
Three words I associate with Rivers are community, passionate, and welcoming. Rivers is a really close community and everyone knows each other. Everybody at Rivers is passionate about what they do. Everyone at Rivers is also super welcoming. I remember coming to Rivers on my first day and not knowing anyone. Even though my brother went here, he was in 9th grade so I didn’t know anyone in the Middle School. After just the first day, I felt like I had been going to Rivers for my whole life because everyone was so nice and helpful.
What is one thing that most surprised you about Rivers?
One thing that surprised me about Rivers is how eager the teachers are to be helpful. The teachers actively encourage you to seek help if you are struggling with a subject or if you just need to talk through your classwork/projects. Also, since classes are so small, your teachers really get to know you and are able to understand what kind of help you need.
What advice would you offer to new students to help them get the most out of their Rivers experience?
My advice to new students is to try new things (like the Middle School community norm says, “lean into discomfort”) and try to get to know everyone, even if they’re in a different grade then you. Rivers has helped me become more comfortable in what I do because I have leaned into my discomfort. Talking to people from other grades has allowed me to meet new people and make good friends that I wouldn’t have known if I had just talked to people from my grade. I know people who are younger than me and people older than me who are in the Upper School.
