Lisa Byrne ’19 Wins Top Award in Next-Up! Exhibit

For the second year in a row, a Rivers artist garnered First Prize, in the Next-Up! art competition, hosted by the Page Waterman Gallery in Wellesley. Lisa Byrne ’19 received First Prize for her drypoint entitled Artist’s Hand. In addition, three Rivers artists received honorable mention: Joelle Mentis ’18, Self-Portrait, Oil on Canvas; Isabel Silvia ’18, Cascading, Porcelain; and Emily Smith ’18, Unity, Porcelain.
 
Now in its second year, this juried show expanded to include more than 100 entries from ten schools: Wellesley, Needham, Natick, and Weston Public Schools, as well as Rivers, Beaver Country Day School, Cambridge School of Weston, Ursuline Academy, Roxbury Latin School, and Walnut Hill School.At the opening reception on Sunday, May 6, awards were announced by Ryan Black, exhibit curator, with gallery owner (and Rivers alumnus) Sturdy Waterman ’74.
 
Eight other Rivers students have artwork in the exhibit: Myles Epstein ’19, Sun Shower, Inkjet Print; Alexander Klein ’18, Skeletal Portrait, Gelatin Silver Print; Iman McPherson ’18, Morning Posture, Gelatin Silver Print; Jonathan Moore ’19, Hancock Reflection, Inkjet Print Jessica Mulder ’18, Frost Bite, Stoneware; George Reinhardt ’20, The Sage, Gelatin Silver Print; Hunter Taylor-Black ’19, Illuminated Thoughts, Gelatin Silver Print; and - with two entries - Matthew Cronin ’19, Self-Portrait, Etching and Leather Bones, Intaglio printed from worked leather. “This is a very impressive show with lots of quality artwork,” commented Rivers’ Visual Arts Department Chair David Saul. “It is wonderful to have another juried venue where our outstanding student artists can submit their work to be selected for inclusion in a multi-school exhibition in the community.”
 
Jurors for the show were John Hagan of the Hagan Collection, Joan Hayes of Fine Leaf Art, and Scott Bell of Theo & Isabella Design Group.
 
The exhibit, inaugurated last year to celebrate the 100-year anniversary of the gallery located at 26 Church Street in Wellesley, will run through Monday, May 14 during regular store hours.
