Student art at Rivers reached an impressive milestone last week, with students earning a record-breaking 51 honors in the 2012 Boston Globe Scholastic Art Awards. The 47 Rivers students were recognized with 26 honorable mentions, 15 Silver Key Awards, and 10 Gold Key Awards. Pieces honored with Gold and Silver Keys will be displayed in a two-month exhibit in Boston, and Gold Key-awarded work will be sent to New York City for national consideration.

“Historically we’ve always done well in the Scholastic Art Awards, but the number of students whose work will be showcased in the Boston show this year is just outstanding,” said David Saul, visual arts department chair. “Rivers student artists are featured in the Boston show far more than any of the other participating independent schools.”

Saul also pointed out that among the 51 honors, both Middle School and Upper School students are represented from each visual arts faculty member’s class. Ceramics students performed especially well this year, but the honored work covers all forms of two and three-dimensional media.

“The notable proportion of Gold and Silver Keys and our success across all media really represents the full spectrum of our visual arts curriculum,” said Saul.

There were nearly 14,000 images submitted as individual category entries by more than 6,500 individual students this year. Sixty percent of Rivers’ submitted artwork was honored and one-third of the submitted artwork was selected for the state show, which is significantly higher than the statewide average of 45-50 percent of student work honored overall and one-fourth selected for the state show.

According to Saul, the continued success in competitions like this proves that creativity and art are accessible for all students at Rivers, thanks to a faculty and curriculum that encourage students to take art seriously.

“What is unique and special about Rivers is that our program is so inclusive,” he said. “Rivers students are talented across many disciplines, and we give them the opportunity to succeed in art as well as other activities. It was great to see students and faculty recognized for the quality of their work, and it speaks to what a truly great team and community we have here.”
