Winter Sports: Red Wings Earn Championships as Varsity Teams Head to the Playoffs

The season is wrapping up for Rivers’ winter athletics teams, and the Red Wings are soaring! Varsity teams are hopeful to head to the playoffs next week, with Middle School and Junior Varsity teams ending the season tomorrow, February 23. 

Basketball
Last week, Boys’ Varsity Basketball defeated Roxbury Latin on Wednesday, Nobles on Friday, and Pomfret on Saturday to improve to a 21-2 record on the season. They continued the streak of successes yesterday, Wednesday, February 21, defeating Groton for a 22-2 record on the season. Robby Fiore ’25 scored 16 points, with one rebound and one steal. Jay Jones ’24 scored 12 points with seven rebounds, and added six assists and four steals. Ryan Altman ’25 scored 11 points with one rebound, and had one assist and one steal. Andrew Alekseyenko ’25 scored nine points and five rebounds, with two assists, two steals, and one block. Amir Lindsey ’24 scored eight points and two rebounds, and had eight assists and two steals. 

Wednesday’s win clinched the ISL Championship outright for the eighth time in school history, giving the team the first outright championship since 2014. Way to go Red Wings!

Girls’ Varsity Basketball brought in a string of wins earlier in the month. including last week in their game against Brooks on February 14. They fought a good game but fell 59-52 during yesterday’s game against Northfield Mount Hermon, heading into their last game of the regular season with a 15-8 record. Chase Anderson ’25 scored 14 points, eight rebounds, and had one assist and one block. Natalia Hall-Rosa ’25 scored 10 points, six rebounds, and added two assists. Rissi Smith ’25 scored nine points, four rebounds, and had two assists. Payton Richard ’24 scored eight points and added five rebounds and three assists. Grace O’Sullivan ’25 scored seven points, seven rebounds, and had two assists.

Hockey
Building on their recent successes against Proctor and Governor’s Academy last week, Girls Varsity Hockey defeated Lawrence Academy on Wednesday, February 21 to improve to 12-8-2 on the season! Goals were scored by Lindsay Morin ’25 from Sophie Rousell ’24; by Sophie Rousell ’24 from Chloe Chitkara ’26, and by Brooke Bartlett ’27 from Kathryn Butkus ’27.

Continuing the winning streak (against St. Marks last Wednesday and against Middlesex on Saturday), Boys Varsity Hockey defeated Brooks in overtime to finish the regular season 17-9-1. Carter Meyer ’28 scored two goals including the game-winner, while Justin Graf ’26 and Sam Pandolfo ’28 also scored for the Red Wings.


Alpine Skiing
Congratulations to Girls’ Alpine Skiing on finishing third in the NEPSAC Class A Championship last week! Nina Martin ’28 and Lizzy Stuart ’26 earned All-New England honors for their Top-10 finishes, while Hannah Piché ’26 and Liv Martin ’26 also had top 20 finishes. This was the girls' first year in Class A, as they moved up following their Class B Championship last year.

Also representing Rivers at NEPSACs were Girls: Bea Carswell ’29 and Boys: Alex Carlstrom ’24, Evan Bardinelli ’24, Liam Keane ’26, Nolan Carlstrom ’26, Felix Martin ’29, and Tyler Piché ’29.
