Red Wings Soar Into Spring Athletics Season

The spring athletics season is in action! Rivers’ eight spring varsity teams kicked off their seasons during the first week of April, and ISL league play is underway.

Close battles have defined the start of the season for boys’ varsity lacrosse, with the team sitting at 1–4 through their first five games with a win over Westminster. Captains Zach Musi ’26, Luke Morin ’26, and Carly Hyman ’26 have helped lead a young Red Wings squad, who are hoping for their first ISL win this Saturday when they travel to Tabor for a matchup under the lights.

Girls’ varsity lacrosse is off to a strong start to ISL play, with wins over Brooks and Groton and one loss to BB&N. Abigail Valente ’28 has stepped into the starting goalie role valiantly, and captain Hannah Piché ’26 is closing in on the 100-goal mark for her Rivers career. The team looks to maintain the momentum from Wednesday’s win over Groton when they travel to Lawrence Academy on Friday.

The varsity golf team had their first match of the season on Wednesday, battling Dexter Southfield to a 6–6 tie at Sandy Burr Country Club. They’ll be back in action next week hosting St. Sebastian’s and Dexter at Pine Brook Country Club on Tuesday.

Girls’ varsity tennis, the reigning NEPSAC champions, started the season off strong once again with wins over Milton Academy and Dexter Southfield. Barrie Abraham ’26 is unbeaten through three singles matches, and the doubles pairing of Kate Hayes ’26 and Kate Kenworthy ’27 is also unbeaten. The team suffered their first defeat yesterday to St. Mark’s and look to bounce back on Saturday as they return home to face Thayer Academy.

Boys’ varsity tennis picked up their first win of the season  over St. Mark’s in a hard-fought match at home on Wednesday. Grant Ramirez ’26 was able to clinch the victory for the Red Wings with a singles win as the number 1 seed. The team currently sits at 1–1 in the ISL. They’ll be back on the court this Saturday at Thayer Academy.

Varsity baseball is two games into their ISL schedule, falling to St. Sebastian’s and Thayer. Devin Constantino ’27 has been a bright spot for the Red Wings, launching a two-run home run in Wednesday’s game. The team strives to get in the win column this weekend, when they will play back-to-back games Friday at Austin Prep and Saturday at home against Tabor Academy.

Varsity softball opened their season on the road against BB&N on Wednesday, falling short 8–1. They return to action Saturday as they travel to Lawrence Academy.

With a strong roster of over 40 athletes, track and field had their first meet this past Saturday at Thayer Academy. Jason Minicozzi ’26 (3000m), Abby Boxmeyer ’28 (800m), and Will Lorion ’26 (300m hurdles) all won their events. Elijah O’Mensah ’28 finished second in both the 100m and 200m, while Dash Claflin ’29 finished third in the 800m. The team has their next meet this Saturday at St. George’s School.
