Giving Tuesday Sets a Record

The Rivers community responded with unprecedented generosity to yesterday’s Giving Tuesday, the national day of giving to non-profits and charities. By the end of the day, alumni, parents, faculty, and friends had made close to 400 gifts totaling more than $400,000 to the 2016-17 Rivers Fund. Click here to view the Thank You video.

Rivers’ faculty, staff, and coaches showed their appreciation throughout the day by accepting fun-filled challenges as the donations rolled in. Ten of Rivers faculty and staff who are also alumni kicked off the day with an early-morning shout out for Giving Tuesday. Once the first 100 gifts were received, fans on social media watched chef (and unofficial barber) Michael Clancy shave an “R” on Director of Counseling and Wellness Ben Liston’s head. Faculty members danced with abandon for 200 gifts, and Coaches Pipe and Donahue dumped pots of slime (aka red pudding) on each other at the 250 gift level. Finally, more faculty members piled onto a Rivers activity van for several rounds of carpool karaoke, all to express their thanks to donors for their generous support of the day-to-day costs of educating Rivers students.

Late in the day, two donors, impressed by the outpouring of gifts, promised to match every gift between 300 and 350, up to a total of $50,000.

Helping reach the final totals were Upper School student volunteers who manned a phonathon last evening to reach out to alumni donors.

“I am beyond excited with the success from our one-day challenge for Giving Tuesday,” said Rivers Fund Director Janna Anctil. “The support from our entire community—including trustees, faculty, parents, and alumni— was incredible and proves how special Rivers is to so many of you. Thank you!”
